Athletic Scholarships by Sport

Soccer, golf, track, basketball and baseball: the current Division I roster limits, how aid works at other levels, and recruiting notes for each sport.

One rule applies to every sport below: at Division I schools in the House settlement, the number that matters is the roster limit, and the school decides how many of those athletes get aid. In Division II, NAIA and NJCAA, each sport still has a per-sport aid limit; NCAA Division III and NJCAA Division III give no athletic aid. NCAA.org NJCAA.org

Where we mention an old scholarship cap (baseball's 11.7), it comes from the NCAA's settlement Q&A. We don't list old caps for other sports because we couldn't confirm them on an official page today. NCAA settlement Q&A

Soccer

Soccer scholarships

Division I roster limit

28 men, 28 women

Applies at Division I schools in the House settlement. Scholarships within that roster are up to each school. NCAA Proposal 2025-11

Recruiting notes

  • Club play and showcase events are where many coaches watch, so share your club schedule early.
  • Send full-match film as well as highlights; coaches want to see positioning and work off the ball.
  • Men's and women's soccer have the same Division I roster limit, but programs fund very different numbers of scholarships, so ask.
Golf

Golf scholarships

Division I roster limit

9 men, 9 women

Applies at Division I schools in the House settlement. Scholarships within that roster are up to each school. NCAA Proposal 2025-11

Recruiting notes

  • Golf rosters are small, so every spot matters. Coaches look closely at tournament scoring history; keep a clean record of event results.
  • Two private awards on our list are golf-related: the Evans Scholarship for caddies and the Women's Western Golf Foundation scholarship, which says golf skill is not a criterion.
Golf caddies

Evans Scholarship

Western Golf Association / Evans Scholars Foundation
Who can apply
Caddied regularly and successfully for at least two years; finished junior year of high school with above a B average in college-prep courses; clear financial need; outstanding character, integrity and leadership.
Award
A full tuition and housing college scholarship (per the sponsor's site as of Nov 2026).
Timing
Application goes online in August; the core application is due in late September and financial aid forms in mid-October (2027-28 cycle).

Women's Western Golf Foundation Scholarship

Women's Western Golf Foundation
Who can apply

Timing
The page lists the 2026 scholarships and an apply-for-next-year link; it does not show a deadline.

Track and field and cross country

Track and field and cross country scholarships

Division I roster limit

45 indoor, 45 outdoor, 17 cross country (each for men and for women)

Applies at Division I schools in the House settlement. Scholarships within that roster are up to each school. NCAA Proposal 2025-11

Recruiting notes

  • Track is measurable: link your official results pages so a coach can verify times and marks in seconds.
  • Indoor track, outdoor track and cross country are separate sports with separate limits, so a distance runner may count on more than one roster.
  • Ask whether the program funds sprinters, distance runners and field-event athletes differently.
Basketball

Basketball scholarships

Division I roster limit

15 men, 15 women

Applies at Division I schools in the House settlement. Scholarships within that roster are up to each school. NCAA Proposal 2025-11

Recruiting notes

  • Men's and women's basketball both have a 15-player roster limit at settlement schools. With so few spots, a roster place is hard to get.
  • Coaches watch club and summer events closely; know the recruiting calendar for your sport, because basketball has its own dates.
Baseball

Baseball scholarships

Division I roster limit

34

Applies at Division I schools in the House settlement. Scholarships within that roster are up to each school. NCAA Proposal 2025-11

Recruiting notes

  • Division I baseball used to be capped at 11.7 scholarship equivalencies; settlement schools now have a 34-player roster limit and no sport-specific scholarship cap. Non-settlement Division I schools stay tied to the old 11.7 total. NAIA baseball's limit is 12 full grant equivalencies.
  • Show measurables on video, such as pitch velocity or exit speed, with the date and the source.
  • Playing American Legion Baseball? The Legion's scholarship is on our list.
Baseball

American Legion Baseball Scholarship

The American Legion
Who can apply
American Legion Baseball players. Each state Department Baseball Committee may select one player; department winners are also considered for the All-Academic Team.
Award
$500 for department winners; eight players chosen at the World Series get an extra $2,500, and the most outstanding All-Academic member gets $5,000 (per the sponsor's site as of Nov 2026).
Timing
No deadline is posted on the national page; ask your post or state department. Winners have eight years from graduation to use the award.
Applications go through your state department, not national headquarters.

Questions

Common questions

How many soccer scholarships can a Division I team give?

At settlement schools there is no soccer scholarship cap anymore; the roster limit is 28 for men and 28 for women, and the school decides how many of those players get aid.

How many golf scholarships are there?

Division I golf rosters are limited to 9 for men and 9 for women at settlement schools, with scholarships up to each school. Golf rosters are small, so outside awards like the Evans Scholarship can matter.

Are track scholarships full or partial?

Usually partial, because coaches spread aid across many events. At Division I settlement schools, indoor and outdoor track each have a 45-athlete roster limit and cross country has 17.
